PUNCTURE WOUND

This is a wound on a young horse’s knee. Because there is very little muscle tissue in this area, the wound could have penetrated the joint capsule, which would be cause for alarm because of the possibility of joint infection. A puncture wound is a serious wound and should be treated by your veterinarian.

ABRASION OR LACERATION?

The lower limb is the most common site for a wound. If just hair and a few layers of skin are missing, the wound is an abrasion, which is basically a scrape. If the skin has become separated or cut, the wound is a laceration. Some lacerations heal fine without stitching; others require suturing.
